Sioux City is a unique and diverse community and has one of the largest urban Native populations in the state of Iowa alongside the Latinx and immigrant communities. When the pandemic hit Sioux City many suffered from a lack of help. Great Plains Action Society and The Urban Native Center established a fundraiser in efforts to alleviate some of the stress by providing basic PPE and necessities in the event of families having to self-isolate and possibly quarantine because they tested positive for COVID-19. To date, we have helped up to 200 individuals by providing masks, soap, face shields, and cleaning supplies.
As the winter holidays approach, we are still facing uncertain times and so Great Plains Action Society will continue PPE distribution efforts for this year’s Truthsgiving by handing out PPE bags at the yearly Hope Street and The Warming Shelter, which are places for those who are recovering from addiction, houselessness, and hard times. We will be distributing these bags over Truthsgiving week to help ensure that our community is protected against the second wave of COVID-19.
